This tutorials provides an easy way to install WordPress on IIS using Microsoft’s Web Platform Installer.
Starting point is Windows Server 2019 with the webserver role installed
Step 1: install Web Platform Installer
- Goto https://www.iis.net/downloads/microsoft/web-platform-installer
- Click on Install this extension (download will start)
- From your download location run the installer (in my case WebPlatformInstaller_x64_en-US.msi)
- Keep the default settings during installation
Step 2: install WordPress
You’re now able to auto-install WordPress with the Web Platform Installer directly from IIS.
- Open IIS from the Tools menu
- In IIS click on Get New Web Platform Components
- Search for ‘WordPress’ and click the Add button
- Fill out a password for user root for mysql and click Continue
- Make sure that “Save my password” is checked
- Accept the installation of the prerequisites
- Type the application name and click Continue
- The application name is the (sub)directory that hosts the WordPress site
- For instance: http://www.mysite.com/wordpress
- Fill out some unique phrases that strengthen the security of your WordPress site and click Continue
- WordPress is now installed and ready to be configured
- For safety purposes click on Copy to clipboard and paste the info in a text file (notepad) or your CMDB
- Click Finish
Step 3: configure WordPress
The last step is to configure some basis settings for WordPress before you can login to the administrator panel.
- Select the language that you want to use for your WordPress site
- On the Welcome screen fill out the required fields
- Make sure to use a strong password!
- You should see the next message and be able to logon to the admin panel to start building your WordPress website!
