elow is a description on how to install and activate a Self-Signed Certificate in Microsoft’s webserver IIS.

One should of course install the webserver role first before a certificate can be created.

Step 1 – Create Certificate

  • Open the Internet Information Services Manager from the Tools menu (Server Manager)
  • Select your server and double-click Server Certificates
  • The following screen appears:
  • Click on Create Self-Signed Certificate in the Actions menu
  • Enter a name for your certificate and click OK
  • Your certificate is added:

Step 2: Add Binding

In this step we create a binding: we tell our website that it should use the installed certificate.

  • Select the Default Web Site in Internet Information Services Manager under Sites:
  • Click on Bindings… in the Actions menu and click Add in the pop-up screen
  • The Add Site Binding screen appears:
    • Select https from the Types drop-down list
    • Insert the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of your server under Host name
    • Select your self-created certificate from the SSL certificate drop-down list
    • Leave the default settings for all other options and click on OK
  • The next screen shows the added Site Binding:
  • Exit the wizard by clicking the Close button
  • Your site is now ready to accept HTTPS requests
